Oliver Lanz paints! One could also say that he applies his colours like notes in a score, creating chromatic relations that glow, shine, are painful, relaxing or simply pleasing to the eye. He might therefore be seen as a kind of composer - and it is quite possible to imagine the collision of colours, forms, and the vibrancy of the colour as being audible in the gallery space. Chromatic dialogue, disharmony, over-layering, mixing, contrast and tension are all effects of his painting. He intuitively applies oil or acrylic to the canvas, reacting with precision to the marks already put down, and making use of different techniques that occasionally reveal brush strokes, but sometimes look as if the paint had been poured or sprayed over the canvas. Lanz plays with a broad range of painterly effects with considerable virtuosity so that they acquire a lightness that is characteristic of his pictures as a whole. The colours shine like glazes in different layers on the canvas creating such depth that they produce a spatial effect. The extension in front of and behind the picture plane is extended further by the almost undifferentiated transitions from one picture to the next. Oliver Lanz's works have neither beginning nor end: brush strokes pass over the picture edges like a detail that is retained as a pattern. His pictures are placed together in rows and can be re-combined in infinite variations. While each picture has its own tonality, in combination the pictures have a polyphonic quality.
