It is our pleasure to present Steven Black for the fourth time in Galerie Alexandra Saheb. The new pictures, shown here for the first time, present the viewer with representations of his models that the painter forces to sit or stand still for long periods.
The vitality of the pictures resides not in the movement of the figures but in the figures of brush work: The portrayed subjects have the frozen quality of wax dummies, while the work of analysis has the painter going close to the surface, penetrating the flesh and seeking the vital element there, working up the paint on the canvas as a sign for the flesh turned outward. As well as the usual pictures of figures, the exhibition includes abstract paintings. The abstractions partly resemble close-ups of the figurative images; a kind of summary of the results of the analytical process minus the motif.
Steven Black, *1973 in Australia, lives and works in Leipzig.
