Black OPENING 03.09.2004, 6pm 04.09. - 16.10.2004 Steven Black situates figures in sparsely delineated surroundings or isolates them, seated in pieces of furniture without further relation to the space. The sketched architectonic structures are as schematic as the figure is elaborated, especially the head, which is, to the neglect of other details, subject to a concentration of sculptured paint in the forming of facial features. There is a tension between the voided areas of the paintings, the introversion of the faces and the absence of a narrative on the one hand and the agitated, haptic working of the paint on the other. This tension superimposes itself on the motif. |
